Tip and Ring were the names given to the two-wires of the phone lines entering onto customer premises. Originally, these two lines were terminated on a round audio style jack (much like the jack for a cell phone headset but bigger). The conductor at the very end of this jack was the "tip" (because it was at the tip of the jack), the next conductor down was the "ring" (because it formed a "ring" of metal around the jack).
