SMS - The Short Message Service was defined by the ETSI as part of the GSM digital mobile phone standard. SMS has several unique features:

A single short message can be up to 160 characters of text in length. And can include alpha, numeric, and even binary data.
The Short Message Service is a store and forward service. Messages are held at a center.
The Short Message Service features confirmation of message delivery.
Short messages can be sent and received simultaneously with GSM voice, data and fax calls.
