FUD

Fear Uncertainty and Doubt – A marketing technique often use by the largest companies in a given industry. It is the act of spreading fear uncertainty and doubt about the legality, reliability, security, cost effectiveness, credibility, or usability of a competitor's products.

This technique was thought to be used with great effectiveness by IBM in the 1970's and some believe it is now the centerpiece of Microsoft's marketing and customer retention strategy.
