EAP

Extensible Authentication Protocol - A method used to authenticate users of Ethernet, token ring, and WLAN networks. It is the primary authentication method specified in 802.1X, a WLAN authentication standard.

As the word "extensible" in the name implies, EAP can be used with many different authentication methods such as public-key methods, Kerberos, and smart cards.

EAP is fully defined in RFC 2284
