802.1X

A network user-authentication scheme providing port based network access control. It is used to authenticate users of network resources on both LANs and WLANS.

802.1X uses EAP (the Extensible Authentication Protocol documented in RFC 2284). EAP works on Ethernet, Token Ring, or WLANs, which is used by 802.1X to encrypt messages during the authentication process.
