Uniform Resource Identifier - A unique label for a resource with a specifically defined syntax. The syntax of URIs is described in rfc-3986.
A URL is an example of a type of URI... Sort of. In actuality, URL was the original name for what is now called a URI. In the parlance of the IETF, the original term: "URL" has been made obsolete by RFC 3986, which describes URIs.
