Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol - The two main protocols (invented in 1981) which, taken together, comprise the network protocol used on the
Internet. The protocol is also used for most data networks in operation today. Internet Protocol, or "
IP" is a low-level, unreliable, packet protocol. Transmission Control Protocol ("
TCP") sits (logically) on top of
IP and uses the unreliable services provided by IP to provide reliable connection oriented network communication services.
