A digital transmission link that is capable of transmitting data at 1.544 Mbps (1,544,000 bits per second). T1 can be transmitted over two twisted pairs of copper wire, the same you use in your house. T1 can normally handle 24 voice conversations with each conversation being digitized at 64 Kbps (64Kbps x 24 channels = 1.544 Mbps). Newer, more advanced digital voice encoding techniques available due to the availability of inexpensive and abundant computing power can handle more voice channels by requiring less than 64 Kbps to encode a voice channel. Also, the 64Kbps channels can be divided into any combination of voice and data transmission duties when a T1 link is configured.
