Definition The science of translating sound into electrical signals and transmitting them over wire or air, and then converting them back to sound; i.e., the science of telephones. The term is sometimes used to refer to computer hardware and software that performs functions traditionally performed by telephone equipment. For example, software is available to turn your computer into a voice mail system.
