First Law of Internet Communications -
Be liberal in what you accept,
and conservative in what you send.
--Jon Postel
Also called Postel's Law. It was first written by Jon Postel in RFC760 (and again in RFC1122 )
Though routinely abandoned by many standards boards over the years, this law continues to express the guiding principle behind most of the Internet standards that are in actual use today.
